Jace Birney Becomes Men's Region 1 All-Time Scoring Leader

Updated on 02/26/2025

With a reverse layup, Jace Birney scored his 16th point of the game against Graves County High School on Tuesday, February 4. Additionally, the basket gave Birney 2514 points for his career and a place atop all other players in the history of KHSAA Region 1 basketball.  St. Mary's Chase Cochran held the record at 2513 points, and had passed Joe Ford of Mayfield (who later played at Vanderbiilt) who had 2503 points. With 10 more regular season games scheduled, Birney has the opportunity to grow that total and make his record one more likely to stand for years.

Graves County gave the Bombers the game ball from the evening, and that ball was placed in a commemorative case and presented to Jace before the Graves County game at the Green Palace on February 15.

Buzzer Beater Propels Upset in All A Semi's

Updated on 01/21/2025

With 1.2 seconds on the clock, Luke Sims for St. Mary sank 15-footer to break the 51-51 tie and seemingly sealed the advance of the Region 1 All-A Tournament's top seed.  However, after a Bomber time out, Cole Ballard inbounded the ball to Ike Miller who turned without a dribble and launched a 3/4 court shot that banked in for the improbable 3-point shot and the 54-53 win for the Bombers on January 17.

After falling to the Vikings by 19 points in the second week of the season, the Bombers compiled a balanced attack that included 16 points from Miller, and 27 bench points from Kyler Ballard (12), Cole Ballard (7), and Reed Duren (7) to secure the win.  Duren's 3-pointer with 3:37 to go in the game which gave them the lead at 50-49 was their last field goal in the 3:36. They managed only a free throw by Ed Proesmans at the 2:27 mark before Miller's heroics helped the Bombers advance to finals for a rematch with Mayfield on January 18.
